Can any type of wall hold up a TV and a TV wall mount?

My Mom is trying to get rid of clutter and donate her TV console. She plans on getting a wall mount for her tv (32"). We called a family friend who knows how to install TV mounts safely and correctly but we thought about our wall not being strong enough. I’ve taken some nails out of the wall and grain-like texture falls out of the hole so I don’t know if that’s safe for a TV mount. What kind of wall would that be? Would it be safe?

You have to screw the brackets into the studs. They will not hold in the dry wall. If you have a concrete block wall you have to drill holes, with a masonry drill bit. And use anchors to secure the brackets to the wall. All that you need is available at hardware stores. And very inexpensive.

Any kind of wall is fine, as long as it has studs in it. You don’t hang the mount directly from the sheetrock – you anchor it in the wooden studs that form the structure of the wall. Invest in a stud finder and read the directions on your wall mount thoroughly – you’ll be fine.

Any wall will have studs inside it and that’s what the TV mount will be fastened to –

Tell your mom to keep in mind she may lose a lot of storage, depending upon her old console configuration. I’ve recently gone through this, adding a console for a LCD TV, moving that old large entertainment center to my bedroom, and getting rid of the old bedroom entertainment center, which had wider display shelves and more closed storage space. It’s made it very difficult to display photos (I’ve already weeded them out and I still don’t have enough shelf space) and I’ve only got two large drawers and no shelves behind doors now. I’ve been trying to get this taken care of for over 6 weeks and it’s almost overwhelming.

She should also consider shelving for your DVD player, DVR, cable box, and gaming items… or clutter could remain a factor in her home.
